Mitigating Risk Through IPD

Much like interrogation tactics used by police detectives, traditional methods of project delivery keep team members separated, preventing collaboration and the sharing of information.

This strategy creates distrust and increases the risk of costly oversights.

We think it’s a terrible way to facilitate a construction project.

Solidus has been practicing Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) for over a decade. The core principles of IPD emphasize communication and collaboration across the entire project team from concept to completion. This approach mitigates risk and maintains budget stability.  It requires all parties involved in a project to work in strategic alignment, putting the project’s needs above any personal interests.

A comprehensive project team can include everything from architects, engineers, utility companies, interior and branding designers, to municipal officials, MEP & trade contractors, security & surveillance vendors, and furniture suppliers. And while traditional project delivery would allow each of these parties to set their own agenda and performance standards, IPD requires consensus. Without consensus costly project oversights and delays are inevitable. This level of solidarity can only be achieved by bringing everyone to the same table at the same time.

Think of it this way, traditional project delivery functions like a relay race, where each participant is only responsible for their portion of the competition. In contrast, IPD functions more like a crew team working in unison to bring your project across the finish line. By keeping everyone’s skin in the game and sharing accountability we achieve a higher level of innovation and seamless project execution. With an emphasis on communication, each member of our carefully assembled team understands the importance of transparency and maintaining an open dialogue. Under IPD, team members are expected to value each other’s time and contributions equally. This approach prevents any one party from overlooking or disregarding details that might be important to another party. This is especially beneficial for occupied renovations as it helps our field supervisors synchronize construction activities, minimizing disruptions to that client’s day-to-day operations.

To state it simply, Integrated Project Delivery provides a layer of protection against the pitfalls and private interests that make construction projects stressful and unpredictable.
