Challenges

• Construct and remodel Wesleyan University's 15,000 square foot campus bookstore and café during the school's six-week summer break
   
• Excavate and reconstruct a section of the building's structural underpinnings - including foundations for a new elevator -- on a very small exterior lot under stringent building and health code requirements
   
• Complete the underpinning and elevator shaft in the midst of torrential rains, often while working in waist-high water
   
• Keep the bookstore operational, secure and safe during the reconstruction

• Met weekly with a dedicated high-level project team, including university and bookstore representatives, the project's architects and subcontractors
   
• Addressed the school's limited budget with intelligent design, construction and materials solutions, which lowered costs while maintaining the design's aesthetic and functional integrity
   
• Optimized the bookstore's flow, function and comfort by working closely with a National College Bookstore operator to define and finalize the interior layout and finishes
   
• Enhanced safety, aesthetics and access by installing a new fire alarm system, upgrading bathrooms, reworking mechanical and electrical systems, painting the exterior façade and building a new parking lot
